Thomas was born in 1803, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, England ^[1]

He married Martha Mitchell in Kettlethorpe, Lincoln, England in 1822 ^[2]

In 1829 Thomas Cotton Smedley was a brick and tile maker. Smedley and Wilson, brick makers ^[3]

By 1834 Thomas was an 'Insolvent Debtor' (see photo of Announcement) ^[4]

In 1841 he Married Eliz Joynes (see photo of marriage cert)

On the 1841 Census his occupation was a Brick Maker and he was living in Yorkshire^[6]

In 1842 a Bankruptcy Notice was published in the Yorkshire paper (see photo of announcement)^[7]

On the 1851 census he was a brick and tile maker and he lived in Mansfied^[8]

Thomas was baptised into the Church of LDS in 1851. ^[9]

Thomas Smedley along with son and daughter in law, Thomas Joynes and Ann Smedley, sailed to the US in 1857 on board The George Washington. They sailed from Liverpool, England on March 28, 1857 and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts April 20, 1857. They were listed as follows: Thos. Smedley 54 Brickmaker Thos.
