I was born in Eitel Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, March 11, 1938. When I was about 2, my family moved from St. Paul to Minneapolis at 2125 Kenwood Parkway (the house is still there and looks good). I went to Kenwood Elementary School (still there) and the first year (7th) of Jefferson Jr. High (gone). I was a good student. I loved reading about 1) horses and 2) dogs and drawing, esp. horses, and writing stories. I also loved riding my bike around Lake of the Isles and taking horseback riding lessons. My health was so-so (asthma). When I was 13, my father took me on a fabulous train ride from Mpls. to Palo Alto, CA to visit his mother (Sophie (neé Williams) (Small) Moultrie and his brother Sanford Small.
In xxx my father had a severe heart attack, sold his share of the company he'd founded, Thermal Company, to his partners, and we all moved to Santa Barbara, CA. We lived on Butterfly Lane in Montecito while I went to Santa Barbara Junior High and then Santa Barbara High School. My favorite classes were World History, American Government, and English though I took 3 years of Spanish and 2 years of French at the same time (and still get them mixed up). My older brother and sister were already in college at Caltech and Pomona, so it was just me and my parents. After my parents divorced (and my dad moved to Los Angeles) my mom and I moved to, first, Diana Lane, and second, Langlo Terrace. I hung around with a bunch of girl friends and was active in church and school activities like our Tri-Hi-Y club (Y-Nots) (president) and the interclub council (Secretary). Again I was a very good student, and didn't date until my senior year. 1950s – It was an American Graffiti time: lying on the beach with a radio, cruising State St., and the guys all crazy about their cars. After I graduated, my mother left Santa Barbara for Westwood (LA) and I went up to Stanford on a California State (merit) Scholarship. To be continued.
