Biography

The son of Andrus "Vincent" Slowitsky (1824-1883) and Mariana Buazis (1830-1887), Anthony Slowitzky is thought to have been born in Hungary in 1855;[citation needed] his birth location is reported on census records as Hungary and as Russia. His siblings included:

  1. Magdalena Slowitzky (1850-1931)
  2. Adam Slowitzky (1852-1928)
  3. Vincent Slowitzky (1855-1876)
  4. Joseph Slowitzky (1857-1866)
  5. Apolonia Slowitzky (1860-1869)
  6. Elisabeth Slowitzky (1863-1869)
  7. John Joseph Slowitzky (1867-1952)
  8. Kazimir Charles Slowitzky (1870-1970)

Anthony immigrated with his family to the United States, arriving in 1882[1] and settling in Pennsylvania, where his father passed away, in Stockton, in 1883. Anthony married Eva (arbara Minsenberger) Slowitzky, the daughter of Franz Minzenberger and Maria Kathryn Gebauer, having five known children together and making their home in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, where Anthony worked as a coal miner.[1] As soon as his children were old enough to work, they did. In 1910, his daughters, Mary and Agnes, ages 24 and 20, worked as machine hands at a local knitting mill; his son, Elexander, age 22, worked as a coal miner; his son, George, age 18, worked as a painter for a contractor; his son, Frank, age 16, worked as an errand boy at the knitting mill.[2]

By 1920, Anthony worked as a watchman at the coal company. His son, Frank, age 26, worked as a car runner at the coal mine. His daughter, Agnes, had married, and she and her husband lived with her parents, while Agnes' husband, Edgar Evans, worked as a machinist at an iron works.[3] Agnes and Edgar remained in Anthony's household through 1930; that year, Andrew still worked, at the age of 75, as a watchman at the coal company and Edgar worked as a laborer at a stripping shop.[4]

Anthony Slowitzky passed away at the age of 77 and is buried at Vine Street Cemetery in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.[5]
