Biography

Elizabeth Sliker was born 16 Aug 1809.[1]

According to "The Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys," Abraham and Elizabeth (Sliker) Arnold were both natives of Newport township and had seven children.[2] "Abraham Arnold died in Slocum about the year 1880, and Elizabeth, his widow, died April 4, 1885, in Leemine, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, at the advanced age of seventy-eight years."

The seven children are listed as: "Catharine, Jacob, who resides in Iowa ; Rebecca, married I. M. Jones, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania ; Lizzie ; William, a resident of Slocum, Pennsylvania; Susan, widow of William Alden Fairchild : Martha, married John Lutz, of Plains, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania."

Elizabeth is most likely a member of the Hanover household of Stephen Sliker that appears in the 1820 federal census. Children in the household included one female 10 and 15 years of age. Elizabeth would have been 11 and the only known daughter in that age category.

Elizabeth and Abraham Arnold would have married about 1829 based on her age, the fact that she does not appear in her father's household in the 1830 census, the death of Abraham's first wife, Tamer ______, about 1827, the likelihood that she is part of Abraham's household in the 1830 census, and the birth of her oldest known child, Mary Catherine, in 1831.

She can be inferred to be the wife of Abraham Arnold, Jr. in the 1830 federal census for Newport Township.[3] There were five children in the household. In their gender and age distribution, they correspond to the known children of Abraham and Tamer.

Elizabeth appears by name in the 1850 census.[4] She was 41. Also in this household were Abraham (Abram), 55, his son by his first marriage, Abram, and six of Elizabeth's children (Jacob, Rebecca, William, Susan, Mary and Martha). Lizzie is missing and likely died young. The two other members of the household were Abraham's daughter-in-law. Esther (Sims) Arnold, 24, wife of Abram, and a James Dougherty, 29.

In 1860, the couple appeared as Abram and Elizabeth Arnold in Slocum Township. Slocum was formed from from Newport in 1854. With them are Elizabeth's three youngest children, William, Susan and Martha.[5]

Abraham and Elizabeth appear in the 1870 census for Slocum township living with farmhand Zura Arnold, 17, presumably Abraham's grandson (the son of Abram Arnold, Abraham's son by his first marriage, and Ester Sims, daughter of Daniel Sims).[6] Abraham lists his age as 75 and his occupation as farmer. Elizabeth lists her age as 60.

In 1880, Elizabeth Arnold, 71, appears in the home of John Lutz and Martha (Arnold) Lutz in Plains Twp.

On 10 Mar 1883, land was sold at a sheriff's sale to pay the $206.25 settlement from a successful suit against Abraham Arnold and Elizabeth Arnold by Ezra Stair, and similar suits in the same amount by three others. The land consisted of 10 acres, more or less, with a two-story house, a blacksmith shop, a barn, fruit trees and outhouses.[7]

Elizabeth died 4 Apr 1885 and was buried beside her husband in Old Stairville Cemetery.

Family histories list Stephen Sliker as the father of Elizabeth Sliker. This anecdotal information is strongly supported by census data and by DNA matching through the lines of Stephen Jr., John and Elizabeth. This DNA evidence is important in terms of establishing Elizabeth's parentage because it can be documented that Stephen and John were the sons of Stephen Sr., and the genetic match supports the assumption that all three were siblings.
