Biography

Francis Sitler was involved in the westward expansion of the USA. See Westward Ho!.

The Axtell Standard (KS), Thursday, January 30, 1908, page 1

Frank G. Sitler, who lived about a mile southeast of Axtell, was thrown from a load of straw Friday forenoon of last week and instantly killed. The accident occurred on the R. J. Sample farm, a milie east of the home residence. Mr. Sitler and his son Bert had just put on the load, Bert doing the pitching and he the loading. As usual in such caases, Mr. Sitler stood up on the load and started the team to pull the wagon away from the stack before his son would get on. In the pull a singletree broke and he was thrown forward, striking on his head on the ground. Death was instantaneous and came from a breaking of the spinal cord.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. H. Fowler. The Axtell lodge A. F. & A. M. and M. W. A. and A. O.U. W., in all of which held membership, attended in order. The services at the cemetery were in charge of the Masons.

Frank G. Sitler was born at Meadville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania, on September 12, 1841, and departed this life near Axtell, Kansas, Friday, January 24, 1908, aged 66 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was the youngest brother of a family of eight children,--four sons and four daughters. All his brothers, Jesse R. Sitler of Bliss, Oklahoma, Henry R. Sitler of Dodge City, Kansas, and Joseph R. Sitler of Newton, Iiowa, surviving him, and of four sisters, Mrs. Ida F. Wright of New York City is the only survivor.

Mr. Sitler attended the public schools and an academy of his native state. In his young manhood he followed the trade of a shoe maker. On the breaking out of the civil war he volunteered as a saddler but was rejected on account of ill health. All his brothers became officers in the Union army.

During the war he came west and followed the occupations successively of farmer, lumberman and railroad contractor, and in the fall of 1869 came up from Texas. After spending the winter at Ash Point, just over in Nemaha county, he homesteaded on the farm which is still the family home.

On September 12 of the same year, 1871, he was married at Newton, Iowa, to Miss Maggie J. Milligan. To this union was born six sons and one daughter. Of this family, the mother, four sons and one daughter, who are Jesse G. and Ida Sitler of this place, Fred G. Sitler of Coldwater, Kansas, Bert L. Sitler of Greensburg, Kansas, live to mourn the loss of a kind, loving and self-denying husband and father.

Mr. Sitler was one of the founders of the Axtell M. E. church and for many years was an active member and worker in the capacity of a trustee.
