Biography

Daniel was born about 1822.

In 1833, at the age of 11, Daniel enlisted himself in the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. to learn music. This would have indentured him until the age of 21. His age was incorrectly listed as 13 at that time, so his indenture was completed and he was discharged in 1841. Daniel was taught to play the fife. Daniel reenlisted in 1841 for four more years, and again in 1845 for four more. After getting out in 1849, there is a two-year gap before he again reenlists again in 1851 for four years. The gap might have been because of personal reasons since he married Anna Catherine Marks sometime around 1851. Unfortunately, something happened during this enlistment and on 20 February 1852 Daniel was dishonorably discharged from the Marines. Daniel was not deterred from continuing military service. On 27 July 1855, Daniel appears to have enlisted in the Navy for three years from Baltimore, Maryland. He reenlists in 1858 for another three years while in Boston. This brings us up to the Civil War time frame. He then serves in Company B, 4th Battalion D.C. Infantry from 17 April 1861 to 17 July 1861. He served under Captain Marks, his wife’s cousin.

He passed away in 1900.
