John married Elizabeth Dodd on 27 Feb 1838 at St Michael's Church in Liverpool, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before; John was a builder. The witnesses were Thomas (no surname recorded), and Alice Holland.

Their daughter Jane was born in about 1840 in Liverpool, Lancashire.
Their daughter Elizabeth was born on 8 April 1841, and christened on 9 May 1841 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as builder, and the family's address as New Church St. Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Church Street, Westfield, Eccleston; John was a builder. Baby Elizabeth was 2 months old. It's unclear where their daughter Jane was on census night.

Their son William was born in 1842, and christened on 1 Jan 1843 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as builder, and the family's address as Windle.

Their son Joseph was born on 3 Jul 1844, and christened on 4 Aug 1844 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as builder, and the family's address as Bridge street.

Elizabeth died in 1846 in Wirral district, aged 29.

She was buried on 6 Aug 1846 at St Mary's Church in Birkenhead, Cheshire.

By March 30th 1851, John was living in Birkenhead, Cheshire with his children Jane, William and Joseph. He was a home builder. Widow Ann Thomas was working as his housekeeper. His daughter Elizabeth was with her uncle William Dodd in Market Street, Prescot on the night of the census.
