Biography

BURIAL Maria Stein Convent Cemetery Maria Stein, Mercer County, Ohio, USA

Sr. Luciana was born Anna Simon, 1st child born to the union of Conrad Simon and Catherine Steffen Simon. She was the oldest of the 13 children born to her mother. Her father had been previously married, his wife having died as a result of childbirth, making Sr. Luciana 1 of 21 children from her father.

When Sr. Luciana was born, most parts of Wisconsin were still "wild prairies and forests." The family was most likely living in a log cabin, though a stone house was constructed around 1868, which still stands today. Sr. Luciana's early life must have been taken up with doing housework, and taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. Death permeated life then, as 4 of her siblings died very young.

Family legend says she left home to become a priests housekeeper in Missouri, and there decided to join the Sisters of the Precious Blood. She entered the order May 27th, 1881, at the age of 18, was received as a novice April 23rd, 1883 at age 20, pledged her oath of Allegiance January 29th, 1886, at age 23, and made her final profession January 29th, 1894 at Maria Stein, Ohio, at age 31. She worked as the cook for the Burkettsville Seminary, along with doing other domestic work. Little is known about her life after she left for the order, but it is known she came home at least once, as she appears in a family picture that was taken around 1906.

She died September 13th, 1925 at Burketsville, Ohio from an apparent heart attack. She was 63 years old. She was laid to rest in the Maria Stein Convent Cemetery, Maria Stein, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, and 13 brothers and sisters.
