Marie (Simon) Hanks is a descendant of an Acadian

Marie (Simon) Hanks lived in Louisiana.

Marie Simon was born c.1846 to Augustin Treville Simon and Arsene Leger, probably in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. She was counted there on the census of 1850.^[1]

They were counted in Lafayette in 1860,^[3] but Marie was counted with her husband, cousin Theodule Simon, and his sister Azelie in 1860 in Lafayette Parish.^[4] In 1860 Marie Simon married Theodule Simon. They had a daughter, Marie Ursule, born 1862;^[5] and a son, Arthur, in early 1864, born months after Theodule's death.^[6] Her husband Theodule Simon died in 1863, a casualty of the Civil War.^[7]

Several years after Theodule's death Marie married Joseph Hanks, in 1869, and the 1870 census shows that they lived next door to Joseph's father Ralph Hanks and mother Marie Arthemise Abshire in Vermilion Parish. The newlywed Marie and Joseph appear to have had an overflowing house: all 9 of her father-in-law Ralph's remaining children were listed with Joseph and Marie (or Mary, as she is called on that and every census after her marriage). This could well be a transcription error. Also counted in that census was six-year-old "Mary Hanks," immediately after Joseph and Marie, and before Ralph Hanks' children.^[8] Such placement on a census record of a multi-family household usually indicated a child of the individual or couple preceding, the implication here being that little Mary Hanks was the daughter of Marie's first marriage-- Marie Ursule Simon. (Most likely the reason for the listing of his siblings in Joseph and Marie's household is a plain old miscommunication or transcription error.)

In any event, Joseph and Marie were still next door to her in-laws in 1800, but with six children of their own, and two more to follow.^[9]

Marie Simon Hanks died in Crowley, Louisiana in 1912. ^[12]
