Rosa Joaquina and José da Silva de Ribeira Jr

Rosa Joaquina was born on the 22nd of April 1860 in the parish of Madalena do Mar, and baptized on the 29th of April.[1] She was the daughter of João da Silva da Horta and Maria Joaquina do Nascimento.[1][2] Rosa married José "Joe" da Silva de Ribeira Jr on the 22nd of November 1874 in Madalena do Mar.[2] Their first child, Mary, was born on the 5th of January 1876.[3] Joe and Rosa had three more children,[4][5][6] with two of them dying before 1885.

Madeira and Hawai'i

In the year 1887 Joe, Rosa, Maria and little Joe left the country that their families had been in for centuries[7] and moved to Hawai'i.[8] Their daughter Louisa was born in 1889 in Honomū.[9] Over the next few years they added Rosa, Manoel and Maria to the family.[9] Joe was working as a Laborer on the sugar plantation, while Rose stayed home with the children.[9] How brave she must have been to venture forth to a country where she didn't speak the language.

Rose bore nine children, with seven of those living to adulthood. By the year 1910 she was living with Joe in Onomea.[10] He was in his sixties by then, and still working as a Laborer on a sugar plantation.[10] While Joe had learned to speak the language, Rose had never mastered it.[10] Young Joe, Manuel, Cozy and Helen were all in the home with them.[10] Helen and Cozy, ages fourteen and ten, were the only ones still attending school.[10]

Rose's health began to decline, and she suffered from chronic myocarditis and chronic bronchitis, as well as dysentery.[11] By 1920 Joe and Rose, now sixty years old, had moved in with their daughter Helen and her husband Antone Cabral.[12] Joe was about seventy-four years old and had finally stopped working.[12] Antone, also born in Portugal, was working as a Station Agent for the Railroad.[12] Their granddaughter Violet had been born little more than a year before.[12]

Rose died two years after the 1920 census was taken.[11] She had reached the age of sixty-two.[11] Joe died the year after. Both were laid to rest in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Kalaoa.[13]

Hey Mindy and Jessica - how does WikiTree like to handle women's surnames for Portuguese families? No last name is added on a baptismal record and on marriage records it seems that more often than not the women has taken mom's surname or a devotional name.

Thanks in advance!

posted by Jim Silva
WikiTree fashions the standards after other countries naming conventions. All children are given the Last Name At Birth based on the surname(s) their father used at the time of the baptism. The devotional name would go in the Current Last Name field. The 'da' or 'de' is only used in the Current Last Name ~or~ Other Last Names field to prevent errors and make duplicates or existing accounts easier to find.

Those names sure keep us hopping, don't they!

Was her LNAB Joaquina or Horta?
posted on Joaquina-39 (merged) by Jessica Key
That actually needs to be updated since her baptism is there. WikiTree naming conventions have her LNAB as Silva Horta per her father's name when baptized. Joaquina was her last name when she came of age (her confirmation) and then as they lived in Hawaii later she took her husband's surname Silva.
