Biography

Abigail Silsby was born in 1792, the daughter of Lasell Silsby. The Silsby family was originally from Connecticut, but Abigail's grandfather Henry and father Lasell were in 1769 part of an early wave of settlers from Connecticut to Acworth, NH.^[1]

Abigail married Eliphalet Bailey, who had also made his home in Acworth, NH, after making the move over from Weare, NH, following his brothers John and Amos.^[2] Abigail's first cousin had earlier married Eliphalet's brother Amos. Eliphalet and Abigail settled in Acworth, where they had the following six children:

2. Giles, b. 7 May 1815; m1. Jane T. Damon, 27 May 1840; m2. Sarah Murphy, 27 Dec. 1844; m3. Mercy H. Bassett, 5 Dec. 1850; d. 17 May 1878 (NJ)
3. Ithiel Silsby, b. 15 Mar. 1817; m. Lucy Patrell, 30 May 1846; d. 16 Nov. 1899 (Cook, Iowa)
4. Emlon Asaph, b. 10 Mar. 1821; m. Polly Elliott Addison, 10 Nov. 1842; d. 12 Dec. 1859 (Missouri)
5. George, b. 18 Dec. 1829; m. Sarah Frances Whittemore, 22 Sep. 1859; d. 7 Feb. 1906 and
6. Louisa, b. 9 Sep. 1832; d. 23 Nov. 1850 (unm.).

This family lived at Acworth, NH, where they were recorded on the 1820,^[3] 1830,^[4] 1840,^[5] 1850,^[6] 1860^[7] and 1870^[8] censuses.

Abigail's husband was a Justice of the Peace^[9] and held numerous other local public offices. He was a selectman of the town in 1813, 1814, 1817-8, 1819, 1820, 1830, 1831, 1832 and 1836 and he was the town representative in the legislature in 1833-4.^[10]

Abigail lost her husband in May 1871, at the age of 94. During the following years, Abigail lived with their son George (in Acworth), where she was recorded on the 1880 census.^[11] She passed away in 1881, at age 89. The couple were buried together in Acworth cemetery.^[12][13]
