Research Notes

Spelling of family name
Most records for James and his children spell their last name as SHORT. However, descendants afterwards (e.g., James' grandchildren) began using the spelling SHORTT. James' own grave marker spells his last name as SHORTT despite the fact that all the written records available for him (marriage records of children, death record, probate record) all use SHORT.

Occupation
Most records for James show that he was a farmer, but some show other occupations:

  • 1850 - Farmer (marriage record of daughter Mary Jane)
  • 1850 - Farmer (marriage record of son Hugh)
  • 1853 - Weaver (marriage record of son John)
  • 1855 - Labourer (marriage record of daughter Sarah Ann)
  • 1890 - Farmer (death record)
