Birth
James Short (later Shortt) was born about 1799 in County Down, Ireland.
Records show that James was a farmer in the townland of Cabragh (Cabra) in the parish of Hillsborough in County Down from at least 1850 until his death in 1890. He may also have worked for a time as a weaver and a labourer, according to the marriage records for his son John and daughter Sarah Ann.
Marriage and family
The name of his wife is unknown at this time. They had at least six children between the years 1826 and 1846.
Griffith's Valuation
The "Griffith's Valuation" land survey of County Down in 1864 shows a James SHORT renting land (house, offices and land) from a William Mussenden in Cabragh, Hillsborough, specifically parcel 53a (with parcel 53b, a house, being sublet to John SHORT), a total of about 6 acres, valued at £6, 10s. annual rent. [approx. 27 The New Road, Hillsborough, County Down, today]. [1]
Death
James passed away before Christmas in 1890 at age 91, a widower and farmer, living in Cabragh (Cabra), Hillsborough, County Down. His son James Short of Cabra was the informant, present at death. [2] James was buried in Anahilt Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hillsborough, County Down. [3] The inscription on his headstone reads:
Erected by James Shortt of Cabra in memory of his father James Shortt, who died 14th December 1890, also his sister Eliza who died 22nd October 1902. Also the above-named James Shortt who died 19th January 1919 aged 76 years.
Probate record
James' estate passed probate in 1892:
SHORT James (Senior) 29 April 1892 The Will of James Short (Senior) late of Cabra County Down Farmer who died 14 December 1890 at same place was proved at Belfast by John Short and Robert Martin both of Cabra Farmers the Executors. Effects £86.[4]
Research Notes
Spelling of family name
Most records for James and his children spell their last name as SHORT. However, descendants afterwards (e.g., James' grandchildren) began using the spelling SHORTT. James' own grave marker spells his last name as SHORTT despite the fact that all the written records available for him (marriage records of children, death record, probate record) all use SHORT.
Occupation
Most records for James show that he was a farmer, but some show other occupations:
1850 - Farmer (marriage record of daughter Mary Jane)
1850 - Farmer (marriage record of son Hugh)
1853 - Weaver (marriage record of son John)
1855 - Labourer (marriage record of daughter Sarah Ann)
1890 - Farmer (death record)
