Edward Shippen was born in 1826 to Richard Shippen and Anna Elizabeth Farmer. Edward is the great-grandson of Chief Justice Edward Shippen of Pennsylvania.[1][2]
Edward married Mary Paul on 13 January 1853. They had four children.[1]
Edward graduated from Princeton College.[1]
Edward joined the U.S. Navy as assistant surgeon in 1849. Travel took him to China, the East Indies, Africa and South America.[1]
Edward served under the Federal Government during the Civil War was was surgeon of the frigate "Congress" at the time of its destruction by the Confederate ram "Merrimac." He was also present at both attacks on Fort Fisher. After the war, Edward made the Russian cruise with Farragut.[1]
Edward was commissioned Medical Inspector United States Navy in 1871 and appointed Fleet Surgeon of the European squadron. In 1876 he was commissioned Medical Director. From 1880 to 1882 he was President of the Naval Examining Board at Philadelphia and was also in charge of the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.[1]
Edward wrote several works and articles on naval subjects.[1]
