John was born about 1818 in Virginia. He and wife Clara were living with 5 likely children in Washington, D.C. in 1870. John worked in the Agricultural Department of the U.S. Government.
In 1880 John and Clara were still living in Washington, D.C. with just one child in their household.
No further details are known at this time.
Research Notes
According to his grandson, golfer John Shippen, the Shippens were enslaved and became free after the Civil War ended, when they came to Washington, D.C. A marriage record for the son John lists his birthplace as Caroline County, Virginia, so it is likely that is where John and Clara were from.
