Biography

Early Life

Stanley Alfred Sherrington was born in Islington in the spring of 1879.^[1] He was the second child and first son of Alfred Sherrington, a waiter, and Maria Jewell, the daughter of a former builder's clerk. His maternal grandfather, John William Jewell, had died two years prior, after being imprisioned at Colney Hatch Asylum for fourteen years on account of "lunacy".

In 1881, at age two, he was recorded living at 12 Ellington Street, along with his: father, mother, older sister Ethel, baby brother Wallace, his grandmother Susannah and his uncle Henry.^[2] His younger sisters Minnie and May Sherrington were born in 1883^[3] and 1885.^[4]

By 1891 the family had moved to 50 Ronalds Road.^[5] The people recorded residing there were: his father, his mother, his four siblings, his grandmother and a lodger.^[5]

Death of Sister & Marriage

In 1898, Stanley's older sister, Ethel, married Herbert Ogborn.^[6] Ethel died giving birth to their child, Harold Ogborn after exactly one year of marriage.^[7][8] (note: the death record incorrectly states that Ethel was thirty two at the time of her death when, she was, in fact, twenty two.)

On August 19th 1900, in St. James, Holloway, Stanley married Florence Ogborn,^[9][10][11] Herbert's younger sister. Herbert and Stanley's sister, Minnie, both served as witnesses.^[11]
