Biography

Mary Shaw was born in 1858^[1] at Kilburn, Derbyshire, England. She was baptised on 1st September 1861 at St Clement's Church, Horsley, Derbyshire, the daughter of Samuel & Martha Shaw.^[2]

On the 1861 census, Mary Shaw (aged 2) lived at Rawson Green, Kilburn, with her parents Samuel & Martha Shaw and her eight older siblings.^[3]

In 1871, Mary (aged 13) was living with her parents Samuel & Martha Shaw at Chapel Street, Kilburn, with four siblings.^[4]

In 1874, Mary had an illegitimate child, Alice Shaw.

She married Thomas Thorpe, after banns^[5], on the 18th April 1878 at St Clement's Church, Horsley.^[6] Thomas was a bachelor and coal miner, of Denby, and his father was Thomas Thorpe, coal miner. Mary was a spinster of Kilburne, the daughter of Samuel Shaw, coal miner. The witnesses were Herbert Shaw and Harriett Shaw.

On the 1881 census, Thomas & Mary Thorpe were living at Denby, with two children, Agnes (aged 2) and Samuel O.(1) who were both born in Denby.^[7]

The 1891 census records Thomas & Mary still living at Denby, now with seven children.^[8]

In 1901, Thomas & Mary lived at the Common, Denby, where they lived with six of their children.^[9]

Mary died in July 1904^[10] and was buried at Denby on 12th July 1904, aged 48 years. Her address at the time of her death was "Denby (Common)".^[11]
