Mary's Mother and Father shared a recent common ancestor, within about 5 generations. Most likely, it is the Reichenbach line. George Shaffer's mother was a Reichenbach, her father would have been a brother to Rose Anna Stahl Shaffer's Mother's 2x's GGrandfather (Henry Reichenbach's Father). Gedmatch-

Biography

George Percival Shaffer is buried at Hassingers White Church Cemetery, Rte. 522, Middleburg, PA

When George was a young man, before he married and up until about the age of 21, he worked on The Pennsylvania Canal. He lived in a house as a boarder, in Liverpool, PA. The house may have been a company house, as in the Census where he was found, there were about a dozen younger men living there also. There was a Livery Stable next door, whether it was connected to The Pennsylvania Canal is not known at this time. George worked a section from Liverpool, PA to the junction of the Juniata River near Duncannon, PA. He would use horses, mules, or a combination of the two daily, to pull barges up and down the canal. See the 1900 Census below. It states his occupation as "Hostler" (Definition- A hostler or ostler /ˈɒstlər/ is a groom or stableman, who is employed in a stable to take care of horses, usually at an inn. Today the word has acquired additional meanings, particularly in the railroad industry. - Hostler - Wikipedia) Obviously, this would have included the Pennsylvania Canal.

George's youngest daughter Mary remembers hearing stories of how, when he was young, he and his family would gather pieces of anthracite coal from the creek or river beds; to use as fuel for heat in the cooler temperatures of the year. She also recalled that he many, many, many times; would go to neighboring farms and help them with their butchering. He would travel with his own set of tools and was said to be one of the best at butchering.

George owned a Grain Mill on route 522, just West of Paxtonville near Royer's Bridge, which burned down circa 1924. He and his oldest two boys went to Rochester, NY to lay rail for the Railroad. His two youngest boys were left at home with the youngest daughter, to run the farm. "He did not believe in Banks or insurance, He kept his money under the mattress, so he almost lost everything". [1] It being the depression era, very few people came forward to pay their bills and his records burned in the fire. They saved the farm and survived just fine, though not easily. George became the local Tax Assessor and Constable from this time, until his death.

His grandchildren say that, in the 1940's he would set them on his lap and tell them stories of how, one day, there would be cars an trains that would go faster than you could imagine. You could pick up a telephone and call to the other side of the world. One day, that you would simply be kept track of by a number. He told them many things that would come to pass nearly 70 years later. It has been told of how he would "Pow Wow" using his Bible and he would heal the animals, though he did not use it on people. One time he took his near death granddaughter to another "Pow Wower" "over the mountain" (Richfield Area of Perry County) and she was cured of Scarlet Fever. His Bible has been passed down to his daughter Mary and her Grandson Ken. It has passages marked and writing in it. Though little of how to "Pow Wow" is known.
