In the 1880 census Lehman Sexton (age 1) was the son of Riley Sexton in Robbins or Black Creek, Scott County, Tennessee, United States.[1]
Leman married Liza Duncan on 8 November 1899 in Scott County, Tennessee.[2][3] In the 1900 census Leeman (age 20), Day Laborer, was the married son-in-law of Elizabeth Duncan in Civil District 14, Scott, Tennessee.[4]
In August 1913 Lehman Sexton was nominated for sheriff of McCreary County, Kentucky, on the Republican Party ticket.[5] In November the entire Republican county ticket won their elections.[6][7] Tails of his work combatting illegal saloons and other lawlessness along the Kentucky–Tennessee border reached the Chattanooga Daily Times in June 1914.[8][9] Lehman Sexton was an officer of Whitley County, Kentucky, in 1916. Together with Deputy Sheriff John E. Douglas, of Oneida, Scott County, Tennessee, he arrested Brent Wyatt on a Queen & Crescent passenger train at the Bear Creek siding near Oneida. The arrest was reported on 13 May 1916 in the Chattanooga Daily Times of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The possibility of a $200 reward was mentioned.[10] Sexton reportedly several run-ins with a local man Harrison Brown.[11] Sexton resigned as sheriff, with a local tale spread that he resigned rather than serving papers to a McCreary County judge who was a good friend.[11] At some point, Harrison Brown shot Sexton four times without cause, breaking both of Sexton's arms and a leg and requiring a recovery of several months. Brown was charged with the shooting and was acquitted of charges.[12] Deputy Sheriff Brown was killed on 18 May 1918 in McCreary County, Kentucky.[12] He registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 in McCreary County, Kentucky. He was unable to work due to sickness.[13]
Lemon was charged with the murder of Harrison Brown. He was tried in Whitley County, Kentucky, and sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1919.[14][15] Leeman Sexton was arrested by prohibition agents in August 1925 at his home near Robbins, Scott County, Tennessee.[16] Lemon escaped from McCreary County Jail, and Kentucky Governor Edwin P. Morrow offered a $200 reward for his arrest.[17][18] In November 1925, Kentucky Governor W. J. Fields made requisition of the Governor of Tennessee for Lemon Sexton, who was wanted in McCreary County for Brown's murder.[19] According to the 1930 testimony of prohibition agent Cain Burnette, Lemon and Cain worked together in coal mining in Stearns, McCreary County, Kentucky, until Lemon left to become sheriff. Burnette described Sexton as a "coal miner, sheriff and moonshiner, a good banjo player and natural comedian." In July 1930 the Chattanooga Daily Times described Sexton's murder of Harrison Brown and eventual surrender to prohibition agent Cain Burnette in great detail.[11]
Leeman's arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday, 20 January 1926, before Judge Xen Hicks in U.S. District Court.[20] On Thursday, 25 February 1926, Leeman Sexton's case was to be heard in U.S. District Court in Knoxville, Tennessee.[21] In the 1930 census Leman (age 51) was a prisoner in the Kentucky State Reformatory on High Street, Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky, United States.[22] He was sentenced in August 1931 for murder for a term of life to six years.[23]
Lemon Sexton, son of Riley Sexton & Martha Begley, died (age 43) by gunshot on 19 September 1934 in Mccreary, Kentucky, United States.[24] He was buried in Stearns Cemetery, Stearns, McCreary County, Kentucky, United States.[25]
