Autosomal DNA Discussion

An Ancestry match lists the amount of DNA that is shared, expressed in a unit called the "centimorgan", or cM. This can be thought of as the length of DNA that is shared. This can also be equated to the percentage of common DNA, where 106 cM = 1.56% shared.

One common goal is to estimate the degree of relationship between two people based on the amount of shared DNA they have. This is cannot be an exact estimate, especially for distant cousins. For example, theoretically, your 3rd cousin should share 0.8% or 55 cM of DNA. However, due to variations in the amount of DNA inherited from each parent, it is possible that ZERO DNA will be shared between you and a 3rd cousin. Consequently, you will have many false negatives in a DNA test between distant cousins, but few false positives.

Let's consider your 5th cousin, who should share 3.3 cM of DNA with you, on average. The Ancestry Au-DNA test does not show matches for someone with less than 6 cM shared DNA, so this 5th cousin would not appear. But is it possible that a 5th cousin can have as much as 62 cm shared DNA (based on actual data), in which case he would appear to be to be a 3rd cousin.

This is a bit like a telescope looking for dim stars. We can only see those dim stars which are bright enough, regardless of their distance from us. Similarly, when we find DNA matches with a only 6 cm sharing, they will more likely come from a cousin more distant than 5th cousin, since these are the ancestors who were lucky to transmit your common DNA. (They are the brighter stars, easier to see.)

So even cousins as distant as 8th cousins (18 steps) can have 16+ cm of shared DNA. And an ancestor out as far as 15 generations can sometimes provide enough DNA to make a positive ID. This could be 500 years or more.

Hello Steve,

On the profile for Nelly Maynard, which I manage, I see you've added a married surname, death information, as well as a child. The source for all of this information comes from an Ancestry family tree, which you added has "many sources".

I do not have an Ancestry subscription, and have not been able to find information confidently linking Nelly Maynard, the child of Joseph and Deborah, as the woman who apparently married David Dopp (I see that the same information you posted is present on her FamilySearch Family Tree profile, however the only sources listed on that profile pertain to her birth.)

Can you specify what sources (at least the names of record collections, books, etc.) support the information you provided? Thanks

I have added some of the sources, but they are also behind the Ancestry pay wall. You might be able to find them elsewhere. I did not find a marriage record. But, the reason I added to this profile was that I am a DNA match to a Simon Dopp descendant, which has a CA of Goodrich thru Nelly. This, of course, is not proof. I did not add Dopp and Stone as her husbands, but I linked Simon as her son the maintain the DNA Match link, marking his mother as uncertain. It would be better if you replied on Nelly's profile so anyone can see this discussion.

Hello Steve,

I first noticed that you are the manager for Alice (Garment) Whitmarsh’s father, Richard Garment.

You and I are 9th cousins twice removed through Alice (Garment) Whitmarsh. If I remember correctly, she’s your 10th great grandmother and my 8th great grandmother.

I read your impressive bio and compared your GEDmatch Kit Number with mine. I did so to attempt to confirm my line to Alice (Garment) Whitmarsh and I discovered that we match on several chromosomes, especially on chromosome 15 with a 5.4 cM segment.

Because I see that we are matching on several chromosomes, I believe we probably have a closer mutual ancestor.

What are your thoughts?

Enrique

His parents were recorded as Johann Georg Hallwachs and Eva Barbara Hailer, hers as Johann Georg Scharpf and Maria Barbara Glaeser.

Steve, I didn't reject the merge, I re-introduced it. I removed the Ancestry source because it is NOT a source! A link to an unsourced tree where all the information has been taken from other trees, does not constitute a source! Please read the correct description of a source here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/934380/november-2019-newsletter-southern-pioneers-project
Hi Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to connect Simeon North to his parents

Hi Steve, would you mind if I added the Early Scandinavia Project to the profile of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Legend-1 ?? We are trying to sort out the old norse profiles and right now I'm working on Lodbroks family.

There was another John Phelps in Lunenburg county. But my Phelps were in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties. John 4206 The father of Wm Phelps 4205, and John 4207, and John W 4203 son of William 4205. Hi Steve, you need to change the NAB to Babcock so it can be merged with the other profiles. Bacbock is a misspelling. The name Babcock was previously Badcock, but never Vacbock. You'll need to do so for the daughter as well. Thanks. Your Bacbock-1 (and any other Bacbocks) need you to correct the LNAB. Only the PM can do this. There is a little tab allowing you to edit the last name at birth. I am going to start the merge, but request you do this so all the Babcocks don't become Bacbocks.

Hi Steve, It's not the wrong father for Aventon Phelps. The Korte genealogy doesn't have any listed sources (I know we've had this conversation) or a wife for Thomas Avington Felps, while I have loads of sources for him. Please check here: https://ancstry.me/2F23HRQ. The DNA doesn't lie either. I have been in direct contact with Ed Phelps who is the researcher responsible for "The Blue Salt Box" of Felps/Phelps, and this information is correct, per the private Phelps Family Master Chart. There is also a private database. I'll check for more sources to support this so we can get everyone situated down the road.
