Nicholas Scull was born circa 1660 in County Cork, Ireland. According to a small notation in a biography of the Biddle family, [1]John Scull was the father of early colonial immigrant Nicholas Scull. The family were of Norman and Viking heritage. Several documents pieced together prove that Nicholas Scull was the son of Alice Fermor, the sister of Jasper Farmer.
Nicholas Scull immigrated to Colonial Pennsylvania on a ship named "Bristol Merchant"[2] and captained by John Stephens.[3] The ship arrived at Chester, Pennsylvania on November 10, 1685.[4]Many members of the Farmar or Farmer family took the same ship to America. Jasper Farmer or Fermor, Nicolas Scull's uncle, died either on the voyage or shortly therafter, as his will was presented to the Probate Court in Philadelphia on November 17, 1685, just seven days after the Bristol Merchant reached dry land. In Jasper Farmer's will, a bequest was made to "my sister Alice Scull."[5]Alice Fermor Scull has been proven as the mother of Nicholas Scull by this document and others.[6][7][8]
Nicholas and his wife Mary were the parents of six known sons:[9]
Fermor/Farmar/Farmer descendant and author Philip Alan Farmer has compiled a list of genealogical sources for the Farmar family. He cites several sources for Nicholas Scull, the nephew of Jasper Fermor/Farmar/Farmer, and others on his blog and book entitled Edward Farmar and the Sons of Whitemarsh.[13] His works are extensive on the genealogy of the Farmer family in America.
