Walter Scott ... 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch

Walter Scott was invested as a Knight in 1590

Sir Walter Scott was Warden of the West Marches with a reputation for leading border raids through the "debatable land" between England and Scotland.

In 1597, Sir Walter Scott was made a hostage of English for an attack on Carlisle Castle. He had led a successful expedition to rescue Kinmont Willie, gathering "a posse of suitable horsemen, composed of Armstrongs, Bells, Grahams and others The Warden, the Duke of Buccleuch, rode through the night in dreadful weather across the Border into England, fording the Eden which was in spate due to the heavy rain, and reached Carlisle Castle unseen." [1] This story is told in the traditional border ballad Kinmont Willie "“He has call’d him forty marchmen, I trow they were of his ain name, Except Sir Gilbert Elliot, call’d The laird of Stobs, I mean the same." [1]

Following the union of Scotland and England with the accession of King James VI to the English throne, Sir Walter Scott was made Keeper of Liddesdale and was active in policing the border country

He led mercenary troops during the war in the Netherlands.

He was created 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch in 1605

It seems that there are problems with the Scott line. Too many Walters. I think Walter Scott & Margaret Kerr may have married in 1586 and had children, including Francis and Walter. This Walter married Mary Hay Oct 15, 1616 and had Walter Scott Earl Buccleuch and others.
