Biography

Christopher Scott of Hatfield Broad Oak was identified as the father of New England immigrants Thomas Scott and Sarah (Scott) Graves based on his will.[1] In his will he names the children of Thomas and Sarah, and these names exactly match the names of the children of the immigrants. The parish registers of Hatfield Broad Oak no longer exist before 1650, so it will be impossible to reconstruct this family from baptism records.
Christopher Scott was born probably by 1570 and died at Hatfield Broad Oak, in the western part of co. Essex, between 1 April 1640 and 23 August 1640, the dates that his will was signed and proved. He was called brother by Henry Younge of Hatfield Broadoak, yeoman, whose will, dated 11 January 1619[/20] and proved on 12 April 1620, included a bequest "to my loving brothers Thomas Scott & Christopher Scott to either of them a peece of gold of vs vjd to be paid to them w[i]thin six monethes after my death."

Birth

Born: Say 1575 (1570-1580).
The date is a very rough estimate. His grandchildren all appear to have been born in the 1620s. From this, we would estimate his own children to be born between 1595 and 1605. The best guess then for his birth date would be in the 1570s.

Marriage and Children

Married: The name of his wife is unknown. She was not mentioned in his will and almost certainly predeceased him.
Children of Christopher Scott:
  1. JOHN SCOTT, b. say 1595; m. by 1621, SARAH -. His children were: 1. Thomas Scott, bp. Gilston, co. Hertford, 3 March 1621[/2]. 2. Mary Scott, b. ca. 1623. 3. Martha Scott, bp. Ware, co. Hertford, 29 Oct. 1626. 4. Sarah Scott, bp. Ware, 2 March 1627[/8]. 5. John Scott, bp. Ware, 4 Oct. 1629.
  2. THOMAS SCOTT. b. say 1597. His children, Thomas Scott, Mary Scott, Sarah Scott, and Elizabeth Scott, were named in his father's will (1640). This matches the description of the family of Thomas Scott of Hartford, Conn., who left a will dated 6 Nov. 1643.
  3. SARAH SCOTT, b. say 1599; m. by 1621, Thomas Grave(s).
  4. MARTHA SCOTT, b. say 1601; m. Sawbridgeworth, co. Hertford, 16 May 1621, William “Prentes.” They had children: 1. John Prentes, b. by 1626. 2. Isaac Prentice, bp. Ware, 23 Aug. 1628. 3. Joseph Prentes.
  5. MARY SCOTT, b. say 1603; m. _____ FOXEN. Her children, Mary, Samuel, and James Foxen, were named in her father's will (1640).

Dates his will was made and proved.

Notes

Parentage: The Peerage website, citing Burke's Peerage 2003 volume 3 page 3544, identifies the father of Christopher Scott as John Scott of Hatfield Regis, Essex, England.[2][3] However, this John Scott is said to have died between 30 December 1558 to 28 January 1558/59. His supposed grandfather died November 1491, 149 years before Christopher. These dates would seem to be way too early for this John Scott to be the correct father. In The American Genealogist article on the English origins of this family, his parents are not identified. John Scott is disconnected as the father of Christopher Scott until better evidence is found.

Christopher Scott could not have been the son of John Scott (1480-1558) since his father would have been dead more than a decade before Christopher's birth in around 1575.
