Judith von Schweinfurt was the daughter of Heinrich von Schweinfurt, Markgraf auf dem bayerischen Nordgau, and Gerberga. The identity of her mother is debated, she could have been Gerberga von Hammerstein following Charles Cawley[1] based on his interpretation of Thietmar,[2] or the daughter of Otto, Graf im Grabfeld.[3] Judith was born before 1003.
In 1021 Břetislav I of Bohemia apparently abducted her from the monastery dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul in Schweinfurt, supposedly because his illegitimacy prevented a normal courtship.[4] This may very well just have been a pro forma abduction as there were no repercussions and Judith "brought castle and dominion Kronach as dowry into the marriage."[5]
Cosmas of Prague writes that after Břetislav’s death in 1055 she was exiled by her oldest son Spytihněv and went to Hungary where she died in 1058. Her body was brought back to Bohemia by her son Vratislav and buried in the St. Vitus Cathedral next to her husband. Also according to Cosmas of Prague while in Hungary she married Peter Orseolo, deposed king of Hungary, to spite her son and all Bohemians.[6] This appears to be a fabrication as such a marriage is nowhere else noted and Hungarian sources are quite uniform in reporting that Peter died shortly after his overthrow in 1046/47.[7]
