Biography

christened on 18 Jan 1830 Immigrated to the USA by after Oct 1862 (birth of Michael) and 1864. He served in the Union Army with Company I, Regiment 12 New Jersey Volunteers from October 1864 to July 1865.

Geinsheim and its history "In the first half of the 19th century, the population in Geinsheim grew rapidly and reached a peak of 1,540 residents between 1861 and 1863. Within half a century the population had more than doubled. The increasing overpopulation and the associated impoverishment of many small farmers, agricultural workers and rural craftsmen as well as several years of hardship and hunger led to an almost epidemic emigration to North America, the preferred destination of the emigrants from Geinsheim." https://www.heimatverein-geinsheim-nw.de/geinsheims-geschichte/

Most emigrants began their journey to America from the French seaport of Le Havre at the mouth of the Seine. The route, which was over 600 km long, had to be covered on foot or by cart.

1900 census cites that he was a harness maker. Son Philip lived at home and was also a harness maker.
