Biography

Leo was born in 1891 in Duluth, Minnesota to Emil Schmied and Emma ??. He grew up in Duluth, where his father ran a newspaper and his mother taught music. The family had German-Swiss origins and appears to have been well off, affording servants. His parents divorced at some point before Leo graduated from the xx high school in about 1909. He lived for 4 years in Cambridge, MA, where he earned a PhD at Harvard University. Leo registered in Duluth in 1917 for the World War I draft, reporting that he was unemployed at the time. About this time, he also began using the name Leonard Elsmith instead of Leo Schmied.[1] He claimed a medical exemption, but ended up serving in World War I with the Office of General Purchasing Agent of the American Expeditionary Forces, based in Paris, France. When he applied for a passport while there, he used the name Leonard Elsmith. His mother and sister also changed their names to Elsmith about this time. After the war, he started living in New York City and was working in an export business as of 1920. By 1925, his mother and sister had joined him in New York City, where he was now a musician and composer, with a particular interest in folk music. He and his sister also worked as music teachers and were long associated with the Brearley School. Leonard married the wealthy and recently widowed Dorothy (Olcott) Gates in about 1934; Dorothy brought five children to the marriage, and she and Leonard had no additional children together. The couple divorced, probably about 1943.[2] He passed away in 1963.
