Helmut Schmidt was born on 23 Dec 1918 in Hamburg. He was the son of Gustav Ludwig (Wenzel) Schmidt and Ludovica, née Koch.

Helmut married Hannelore "Loki" Glaser on 27 Jun 1942 in Hamburg (church wedding on 1 Jul 1942 in Hambergen, Niedersachsen). They had two children:

  • Helmut Walter (26 Jun 1944 - 19 Feb 1945),[1]
  • Susanne (living).

After serving in the Wehrmacht (German Army) during World War II, Helmut studied economics and political science at the University of Hamburg 1945-1949. In 1946, he joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). From 1949 to 1953, he worked in the economics and transport ministry of Hamburg. He was elected to the Bundestag (1953–61), returned to service in Hamburg (1961–65), and was re-elected to the Bundestag in 1965. Schmidt became vice-chairman of the SPD in 1968 and served as minister of defense (1969–72) and minister of finance (1972–74) in the federal government of Chancellor Willy Brandt. Schmidt was elected Bundeskanzler of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland on 16 May 1974. On 1 Oct 1982, having lost his voting majority in the Bundestag, he resigned upon a vote of no confidence. He continued to serve as a member of the Bundestag until his retirement from politics in 1986. Schmidt was the author of numerous books. From 1983 until his death, he was also co-publisher of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit.[2][3]

He passed away on 10 Nov 2015 in Hamburg and is buried at Friedhof Ohlsdorf.[4][5]
