William Scanlan has Irish ancestors.

William Scanlan was born about 1840. He was the son of James Scanlan and Susan Starkweather.

At the age of 21, William appeared in the 1861 Canadian Census with his father and step-mother in Bayham, Canada West. The record indicated that he was born in Upper Canada. ^[1]

At the age of 30, William appeared in the household of his father James Scanlan in the 1871 Canadian Census in Bayham, Ontario, Canada. ^[2]

William Scanlan and Mahala J Thomas married on 9 Nov 1874 in Bayham. He was a 28 year old farmer, born in London and living in Bayham. The registration showed that he was the son of James and Susan Scanlan. Mahala was 22 years old, born and living in Bayham. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Samantha Thomas. The witnesses were James Partlow (likely brother-in-law) and Weston Thomas, both of Bayham. ^[3]

William and Mahala Jane had a daughter Elizabeth Lucinda Scanlan on 21 Jan 1876 in Bayham, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. ^[4]

William and Mahala had a son Walter Scanlan on 8 Apr 1879 in Bayham Township, Elgin, Ontario. ^[5]

William appeared with his family in the 1891 Canadian Census in Bayham. ^[6]

William Scanlan and Mary Kyle married on 5 Dec 1900 in Bayham, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. He was a 60 year old farmer at the time (b~1840) and was born and living in Bayham. The registration showed that he was the son of James Scanlan and Susan Starkweather. Mary was 53 (b~1847), born in Woodstock and living in Bayham. She was the daughter of David Kyle and Ann Wilsh. Given their ages, this was most likely the second marriage for her as well. ^[7]

At the age of 58, William and his second wife Mary appeared in the 1901 Canadian Census in Bayham. ^[8]

William passed away at the age of 64 on 8 Jul 1904 in Elgin County, Ontario. The registration indicated that he was born around 1840 in London City, Ontario. ^[9]
