Biography

This profile is part of the Savoie Name Study.

Marie Savoie was born about 1751 in Acadie, daughter of François Savoie and Marguerite Thibodeau.

Marie and her family suffered many hardships during the Grand Dérangement. In 1755 her father François Savoie was deported without his family to Georgia aboard the "Prince Frederick". Unfortunately, he died in New York and was never reunited with his family. [1]

Meanwhile, her mother Marguerite Thibodeau and her children fled to Île Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island) like many women who were separated from their husbands. However living conditions were difficult there and food was scarce. From where they sought refuge in Canada, Nouvelle-France (now Quebec). They left the island by boat in July 1756, possibly the Dondonnais, with 215 passengers, and disembarked at the port of Québec on 13 August 1756. Travelling with Marguerite were her children Simon, Joseph, Marguerite, Marie, François and Louise. A few years later, they settled in Rivière-du-Loup (now Louiseville). [2]

Marie married Charles Charest (born in Louiseville, Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec; son of Jean Choret and Marie-Madeleine Lemaitre) on 22 August 1774 in Louiseville, Maskinongé. [3]

Their children were:

  1. Charles CHAREST, b. 15 May 1775, Louiseville,
  2. Marie Josèphe CHAREST, c. 9 Dec 1777, Louiseville,
  3. Antoine Choret b. 21 Apr 1779, Louiseville,
  4. Jean CHAREST, b. 24 Jul 1781, Louiseville,
  5. Joseph Charest b. 24 Jul 1781, Louiseville,
  6. Louis CHAREST, b. 15 Aug 1784, Louiseville,
  7. Félicité Charette b. 19 Apr 1786, Louiseville,

Marie died on 4 December 1809 in St-Léon-le-Grand, Maskinongé, Bas-Canada.
