Biography

However, Philippe was more a warrior knight than a praying priest. In 1509, at 19 years old, despite his clerical robes, he volunteered to serve King Louis XII of France. On 14 May 1509 he was noted as a valiant fighter at the Battle of Agnadel, near Milan, where a French-led coalition defeated the army of the Republic of Venice over one of the endless land and trade disputes that marked the early 16th Century. In November 1509 he renounced his Bishop of Geneva's See and all his other ecclesiastical positions, assuming the title and role of "Comte de Genève" instead, ruling as a secular vassal of his older brother, Charles II "the Good," Duke of Savoy from 1504-1553.[2] His brother favored him, granting him an "apanage" (autonomous rule) over not only the Genevois County but also Faucigny and Beaufort valleys and part of Bugey (all now in France).

Count Philippe de Savoie also courted King Francois I Valois of France, who assumed the French throne in 1515 and held it until his death in 1537. Francois was Philippe's nephew and therefore shared close family ties. He gifted Philippe and his new bride Charlotte d' Orléans-Longueville, the Duchy of Nemours in France as a wedding present when they married in September 1528. Thus, Philippe was now a reigning Duke, the heraldic equivalent of his older brother, Charles II, Duke of Savoy, even if Nemours was a much-smaller territory. He also was a "dual vassal" - to the King of France as Duc de Nemours and to the Duc de Savoie as Count of Geneva. He divided his time between the 2 halves of his possessions, holding court at Annecy, where the Genevois council met.

Philippe and Charlotte (d'Orléans-Longueville ) de Savoie-Nemours had 2 children:

  1. Jacques (1531 † 1585), Duke of Geneva and of Nemours
  2. Jeanne (1532 † 1568), married in 1555 to Nicolas of Lorraine (1524 † 1577), Duke of Mercœur (in Auvergne).

In pure Renaissance tradition, he also had a longstanding liaison with "demoiselle Marie de Ferrye" by whom he had at least 2 natural-sons, both of whom became important Roman Catholic clerics.

Duke Phillipe de Savoie-Nemours died on 25 November 1533 in Marseilles, Provence, France. He was 43 years old. His body was returned to Annecy, his main capital, and buried at Notre-Dame d'Annecy.[3] His wife survived his passing for 15 years. Charlotte (d'Orléans-Longueville) de Savoie-Nemours passed away on 8 September 1549 at 36 years old and was interred next to her husband at Notre-Dame d'Annecy.[4]
