Biography

Gil was born in Gentilly, Minnesota, a French Canadian settlement in the Red River Valley in northwestern Minnesota. She was the sixth child in the family of nine daughters and one son born to Alwin and Evelina Sauve.^[1]

By 1910, her father had opened a store in the town of Crookston and the family had moved from the farm into town.^[2]When she was 21, Gil was working as a dry goods saleperson and her father was identified as a traveling salesman.^[3]

Gil married John McGowan when she was 26 years old.^[4]. Their two sons were born in Crookston. By 1930, they had moved to Minneapolis^[5] where John was a representative of a paper company.^[6]

Gil died in Minneapolis at the age of 78. She is buried with her husband in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.^[7]
