Biography

James Sartin (shown as Sartain in christening) was baptised at Corscombe on 25 December 1794 ^[2]. His parents are shown as Wm Sartain and Martha Sartain.

James married Martha Cornick on 18 Jul 1813, Corscombe, Dorset, England ^[3]. They had eleven children: 4 sons and 7 daughters.

In the 1841 census at Corscombe, Dorset, England the family is shown as: James 45, Martha 46, Levi 20, James 16, Henry 14, Loueisa 12, Merina 8 and Charlotte 5 ^[4]. His eldest son Edmund and his family had immigrated to New Zealand in 1841. Eldest Louisa passed away in 1828 and no mention of Caroline eldest daughter.

At Corscombe in 1851 census, family shown as: James 57, Martha 58, Henry 25, Eliza 20, Marianne (Marina) 17 and Charlotte 15. No mention of Levi, James and Louisa ^[5].

He died on 19 march 1876 and was buried at Corscombe on 26 March 1876. His death certificate says cause of death was unknown and that his occupation was a journeyman mason. Corscombe burials as transcribed by Terry Pine ^[6]

Living next door is eli sartin aged 32/38 occ boot and shoe maker and his wife and children(i would imagine eli is actually levi) also on the same page is a possible brother of james sartin william sartin age 65 occ. mason he is with his wife and children both eli and william were born in corscombe
