Biography

England Orphan Team
Andrew Sansum has completed the England Project's Post 1700 Orphan Trail I.
England Orphan Team
Andrew Sansum has completed the England Project's Pre-1700 Orphan Trail II.

My interest in family history only started at the beginning of lockdown, up until then my interest in history of any kind being quite minimal! The last couple of years have been a period of personal growth and I've learned many new and interesting things about the history of the country I live in and the lives of my historical family.

My current projects:

  • My paternal - so English - direct-line (and interesting related characters) am still building and improving profiles.
  • My maternal line is much tougher and based in South Wales and is on the back burner at the moment on wikitree, although most of my family lines are documented back to the early 19th Century.
  • Nailing down all the Sansums of London (pre-1837) hunting clues for my own family. Sansums of London (England) 1700 to 1837
  • Soap makers of Bristol 1550-1750. I have many of these in my family tree and hope to broaden this out into a project shortly.

I trained as a physicist and worked as a research scientist in the field of particle physics until I was about 30. In 1990 my work shifted to delivering large scale computing for some of the UK's Science communities. Something I am still involved in full time today.

Most recently I am chasing down DNA matches and linking them up to my known (and unknown tree). The more I learn about using DNA for this purpose the more complicated I realise the task is!

Its been interesting to see that the skills needed as a research scientist and those needed as a computer systems engineer are not so very different from what is needed to track down historical sources and use them to build a coherent picture of past events. Its probably why I've found this process quite compelling.

Still learning!

Hi Andrew, Would you join the St. John Y-DNA project at FTDNA so I can compare your Y-DNA to the St. John families. Sansum has been shown to be a phonetic variation of St. John. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/st-john/dna-results

Hi Ian,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m very happy with my team choices at present. I’m currently working on biographies from Bristol and London and so I guess it’s fair to say that my highest priority is Bio Builders, but I’m really hoping to put more time into Livery Companies, but second priority for me at present.

Thank you Andrew. And thanks again for being part of the England Project!

Hi Andrew,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Michele,

Thank you for the Pre-1700 welcome. I wasn’t planning to start creating pre-1700 profiles immediately but was planning to work through style guides etc and get the post 1700 profiles I’m working on in order first. I dare say that could take a while yet, in due course once I’m happy I know what I’m doing I will get in touch with the England project. I have quite a few Bristol, livery guild members to enter eventually which I’m looking forward to doing but want to get right in terms of style and quality.

Thanks Andrew

That sounds like a very good plan.

Hi Andrew,

Great to see you’ve become a Wikitree Family Member! Creating your family tree in Wikitree provides you the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other members.

Since WikiTree is different from other genealogy sites, we have a guided tour for new members at New Member How-To. Feel free to work through the How-Tos at your own pace.

If you have questions about how WikiTree works, let me know. It is wonderful to have you on board, enjoy, and good luck growing your branches.
