Henry Sanford is Notable.
Henry was an American diplomat and United States Ambassador to Belgium (1861-1891). He also founded Sanford, Florida, and successfully petitioned the United States to recognize King Leopold II of Belgium's claim to the Congo Basin, eventually known as the Congo Free State. [1]

Henry Shelton Sanford (1823-1891) was the only son of American industrialist Nehemiah Curtis Sanford (1792-1841) and Nancy Bateman Shelton (1800-1880). He was a direct descendant of Connecticut Governor Thomas Welles.

In 1864, he married Gertrude Ellen Dupuy (1841-1902) in Paris, France, and they had seven children:

  1. Henry Shelton Sanford Jr.,
  2. Gertrude Ellen Dupuy Sanford,
  3. Frida Dolores Sanford,
  4. Ethel Sanford (Gertrude Sanford Legendre's mother),
  5. Helen Carola "Cara" Nancy Sanford,
  6. Leopold Curtis Sanford, and
  7. Edwynne Emmeline Wilhelmina McKinnon Sanford.
