Biography
Henry Sanford is Notable.
Henry was an American diplomat and United States Ambassador to Belgium (1861-1891). He also founded Sanford, Florida, and successfully petitioned the United States to recognize King Leopold II of Belgium's claim to the Congo Basin, eventually known as the Congo Free State. [1]
Henry Shelton Sanford (1823-1891) was the only son of American industrialist Nehemiah Curtis Sanford (1792-1841) and Nancy Bateman Shelton (1800-1880). He was a direct descendant of Connecticut Governor Thomas Welles.
In 1864, he married Gertrude Ellen Dupuy (1841-1902) in Paris, France, and they had seven children:
