The Fold3 service file contains the following information.[4]
From April 18 to June 30, 1862, John was marked as Absent on Sick Furlough.
John was listed as Absent Without Leave beginning on August 1, 1862
On a record of Payments to Discharged Soldiers, John is listed as being discharged on September 21, 1862. No reason is given in the file.
John's wife Julia applied for a widow's pension after his death which was denied due to there existing no record of him returning to his unit or being discharged properly after his sick furlough.[5]
Since John's record was marked AWOL without evidence of returning, the pension board judged him "deserted" and denied the pension. It appears to have been later granted. There are several sworn affidavits in the file from men who knew John in the service.
Julia stated that John had "camp measles." Measles and smallpox present similar symptoms and were not well understood at the time. She also stated that he never returned to good health and was properly discharged due to ill health. She saw the papers herself and read them several times, but unfortunately, they were lost in a fire.
