From the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library:
Jose Simeon Sanchez was born in 1797 in St. Augustine, Florida. His parents were Francisco Xavier Sanchez and Maria del Carmen Hill. At the time of his birth, and during his youth, the family life and public stage were both set to equip him with knowledge and experience that will result in a career that ranks him as one of the most prominent native sons of the Florida Territory and Statehood days.
Responsibilities were early thrown on his shoulders after his father died in 1808, leaving his large estate to his numerous children. During his youth, Jose Simeon served in the Spanish forces at Amelia Island and after 1821 in the Militia of the Territory of Florida. In 1829 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1827 he had become Sheriff for St. Johns County and he served as Marshall for East Florida, Justice of the Peace, attorney, tax collector, administrator of various estates and Mayor of St. Augustine in 1847.
During all that the time he was pursuing his public career he also gave attention to his own business affairs and to those of his relatives. For many years he was involved in long drawn out proceedings before land claim commissions, set up by the United States to determine ownership of contested land.
Jose Simeon Sanchez died in September of 1853 in St. Augustine. His death brought to an end one of the most notable careers of a native son of this city.[9]
