Biography

Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling was born on 21 December 1832.

He was the son of Louis Samuel and Henrietta Israel.

He married Ellen Cohen, daughter of Louis Cohen and Rebecca Floretta Keyser, on 5 March 1862.

He died on 12 January 1911 at age 78, and is buried at Edmonton Federation of Synagogues Cemetery (aka Edmonton Jewish Cemetery), Edmonton, London Borough of Enfield, Greater London.[1]

He was County Southampton (both UK). He lived in Swaythling. He was Justice of the Peace (J.P.) Hampshire.

He was Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) London.

He was given the name of Moses Samuel at birth.

He gained the title of 1st Baron Swaythling. He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Lib) Whitechapel in 1885.

In 1894 his name was legally changed to Samuel Montagu by Royal Licence. On 23 June 1894 so created and 18 July 1907 respectively.
