Phyllis Marjorie "Phyl" Sampson (married name Cohen, which was later changed to Cullen) was born on 8 August 1911 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of Thomas Pollard Sampson and Clarice Effie Sampson. [1][2][3]
In February 1932 in Woollahra, she secretly married Paul Cohen, son of Sir Samuel and Lady Elma Cohen. [4][2][5][6] She and Paul didn't tell their parents about their marriage until late April. [5] Their children were twins:[2]
In 1941, Paul and his brother George changed their Jewish names and those of their families, to Cullen. They were both fighting the Germans in North Africa, Greece and Crete and knew that, were they to be captured they would not be treated as Prisoners of War.
Phyl and Paul ended their marriage in 1961. Phyl did not marry again. [2]
She died on 22 October 2011 in Elizabeth Bay, an inner eastern Sydney suburb, aged 100 years and almost eleven weeks. [2]
