Biography

Mary Saltsman was born in Pennsylvania in 1769, the oldest child of Philip Saltsman and Elizabeth Swickard. Mary's father, Philip, was a Private in the Revolutionary War. Her brothers Martin and Andrew Saltsman served in the War of 1812.

Mary's grandparents were immigrants from Germany. Her paternal grandfather, William Saltsman, arrived at Philadelphia on the ship Edinburgh on September 16, 1751, settling in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her maternal grandfather, Daniel Swickard, arrived at Philadelphia on the ship Betsey on September 19, 1765.

Mary married John Twaddle, of Irish/Scottish descent, around 1798. They settled in Springfield Township in Jefferson County, Ohio, where they raised the famous "Blind Twaddle" children.

After the death of her husband, John, it is believed that Mary came to Illinois to live with her son, William Twaddle. She is buried in Scott's Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois
