Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was the third son of Queen Victoria and governor general of Canada from 1911 to 1916. He was the first member of the Royal Family to hold the post. As governor general during the First World War, he was involved in military recruitment and training. He also established the Connaught Cup for marksmanship in the Royal North West Mounted Police. He renovated Rideau Hall and made an effort to contribute to the social life of the capital.[1]
Prior to his Canadian appointment, he led a military career. He married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia on March 13, 1879. They had three children: Princess Margaret, Prince Arthur and Princess Patricia.[2]
He died in 1942 at the age of 91.[3]
