Biography

Charlotte Sophie, Duchess von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld was born at Coburg, 24 September 1731, the fifth child and second, but eldest surviving, daughter of Franz Josias, Duke of Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld and his wife, Anna Sophie, Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.[1]

The Saxon domains of the Ernestine branch of the Wettin family were often subdivided between sons and her father was originally Duke (Herzog) von Saalfeld, ruling jointly with his elder brother Christian Ernst. However in a further subdivision in 1735 they inherited Coburg and were known as Dukes of Sachsen-Saalfeld-Coburg or Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld. Her father then became sole Duke with the death of his brother without issue in 1745.[2]

Charlotte was married by proxy at Coburg on 25 April 1755 and in person at Schwerin on 13 May 1755 to Ludwig, Prince von Mecklenburg-Schwerin.[3] He was born on 6 August 1725 at Grabow, the second surviving son of Christian Ludwig, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Gustave Karoline von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.[4]. He became heir to Mecklenburg-Schwerin once his brother Friedrich became the reigning Duke in 1756 and was known as the Erb-Prinz or Hereditary Prince.

They only had two children:

  1. Friedrich Franz I, born 10 December 1756 at Schwerin, succeeded his uncle as Duke (Herzog) von Mecklenburg-Schwerin and was created Grand Duke (Gross Herzog) von Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1815;
  2. Sophie Friederike, born 24 August 1758 at Schwerin, married 1774 to Frederik, Hereditary Prince of Denmark,[5]

Ludwig died before his brother on 12 September 1778 at Schwerin, which meant that Charlotte Sophie never became the Duchess (Herzogin) of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. She died at Schwerin 2 August 1810.[6] They are both buried in the Schelfkirche St Nikolai in Schwerin.[7]

Mecklenburg-Schwerin-20 and Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld-6 appear to represent the same person because: Mecklenburg-Schwerin was the family she married in to, her LNAB is Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld
