The son of Gottlieb Julius Rutz and Luise Charlotte Karoline Bertha Krugel, Friedrich "Fred" Rutz was born in Pomerania, Poland on 15 Sep 1875. His nickname was also 'Fritz'.

He married Ida Adeline Erdmann (1879-1964) in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, United States on 12 May 1898 at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. ^{[1] [2]} Their children:
