Jacob R Ruetschi was born on December 31, 1724, in Schlieren, Zürich, Switzerland, to Barbara Lips, age 27, and Konrad Ruetschi, age 26. His brother Henrich was born in 1728 in Schlieren, Zürich, Switzerland, when Jacob R was 4 years old.

On 24 FEB 1735 he left Rotterdam on the ship Mercury with his parents and younger brother Henrich. His brother Hans Jacob was born on May 14, 1735, on the ship Mercury. On 29 MAY 1735 the ship arrived in Philadelphia, Bucks, Pennsylvania, United States.[1]

Jacob married Maria Katarina Mayer in Williams Township Congregation, Northampton County, on October 8, 1747, when he was 22 years old.

Starting around 1740, many families migrated from Philadelphia south along old Indian trails by Conestoga wagons (then called Waggons) to Virginia and the Carolinas. The Jacob Rutschi (later Ritchie) family traveled along the Upper Road and settled near where Charlotte is today around 1750.

In 1790, he lived in Mecklenburg, North Carolina.[2]
