I grew up on Laurel Ridge near Jennerstown, PA. I went to Bishop Mccort High School (Class of 1990) and the University of Pittsburgh for undergraduate and graduate degrees. I then did a post-bac. at Slippery Rock University. I worked as a park ranger. In 2002 I moved to Taiwan, Thailand and Australia where I was a teacher, librarian, AusAid Project Manager and Waterwatch Facilitator. I was married to Robert Noakes from October 5, 2002 until November 2012. I gave birth to our daughter Vivian Sara Elva Noakes on March 4, 2003 in Thailand. Robert was an alcoholic and became physically abusive in January 2012. In February 2012, because Rob was stalking me, and I had no support from family in Australia, I moved back to the US with my daughter Vivian Noakes. We moved to Grand Lake Stream Maine, where I was the communications manager of Downeast Lakes Land Trust. I then moved the family to Addison Maine and worked variously as a Project Manager on Agricultural Development, ran Downeast Salmon Federation's Land Trust (adding over 2,000 acres of land) and then as the Community Resilience Coordinator for the Downeast Region.
I wrote: "Considering Laetoli," "Coyote Love," and "Sow" under my married name "Tanya Rucosky Noakes" I never officially changed my name.
