From "The Journal and Republican" Lowville,NY dated Thursday Oct. 22, 1931 MRS. WEALTHA ROUSE BROWN 100 YEARS OLD NOVEMBER 6 Born November 6,1831, Educated at LaFargeville & Lowville Mrs. Wealtha Rouse Brown, of Watertown, mother of Attorney Abner B. Brown, will celebrate her 100th birthday Nov. 6. A reception Is being planned for her on, that date. Mrs. Brown in a remarkable woman in many respects. In spite of her age, she is in excellent health. A daughter of Collin Rouse, she was born 11 miles from Watertown at Rouse`s Corners, Nov. 6, 1831. She had two sisters and six brothers. Her father was a prosperous farmer of that section. William Rouse, an uncle of Mrs. Brown, was a member of the state legislature and for 40 years was a Sunday school superintendent. Daniel Rouse, grandfather of the late Senator Elon Rouse Brown, was sheriff of the county. It is claimed that the first Collins Rouse was first in that section to have a carriage and likewise the first to purchase and use a stove for cook- ing, fireplaces and brick ovens having been in common use at the time. The stove was bought in Buffalo and he went there after it, the trip consuming one week each way. Ten years after that kerosene lamps first came into use. . Mrs. Brown was educated in the school at Lafargeyille and at Lowville Academy, later teaching school for $1.50 a week until the time, of her marriage, when she was paid $3. She was 15 when the Mexican war broke out and 80 when the Civil war was in full swing. Her father was a strong abolitionist and his home was a station of the underground railroad employed in getting southern slaves safely across the border into Canada. In 1807 she married the late Bennett F. Brown and both she and her husband were ardent workers in the cause of. temperance and religion. Watertown.—Mrs. Wealtha Rouse Brown, 102, oldest resident of northern New York, died at 3 o`clock Thursday afternoon at the home of her son, Attorney Abner B. Brown, in Watertown. She was a native of Stone Mills, Jefferson county, and a daughter of Collins and Dolly Sexton Rouse. She was married to Bennett F. Brown, of Stone Mills in 1857. He died in 1900 at Philadelphia . Since her husband`s death Mrs. Brown has lived with her son. She Was long prominent in the work of the First Baptist church. She leaves besides her son, another son, Kenneth C. Brown, of Upland, Calif.
