In 1915 Mary became famous as one of the leaders of the rent strikes in Govan.[7]
In 1920 Mary stood as a Labour candidate in Glasgow Town Council elections to represent the Fairfield ward of Govan, and won her seat.[7] By 1924 she had become one of Glasgow's first women baillies.[7]
