Biography

Mary and her sister Lena had moved to Chicago to find work. They were living in Chicago during the great Chicago fire of 1871. With the city burning, the two girls carried their few possessions and walked north to reach the railroad and transportation to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Rothenberger family had heard about the fire and were regularly meeting every train. They were overjoyed when the girls arrived. A short while later, the girls returned to Chicago, where Mary was hired as a servant and subsequently married John Bushman. The combined family lived in South Chicago. John and Mary had nine children, of whom four were boys who all died in infancy.
