Biography

Emerenciana was born in 1877 to José Lorenzo Romero (1827-1920) and María de las Reyes (Mestas) Romero (abt.1854-).[1] In 1899 she married Charles William Korte (1871-abt.1912)[2] and they had seven children:

  1. Emilio Enriques Korte (1899-1975)
  2. Nellie Juana (Korte) Nees (1901-1959)
  3. Lillie Korte (1902-1925)
  4. Charles Daniel Korte (1904-1974)
  5. Francisca Berce (Korte) Lucero (1906-)
  6. Elena Cecilia (Korte) Lucero (1908-1982)
  7. William Frederic Korte (1910-1994)

Charles had come from a wealthy family that had lost everything in a 10-year court battle settled a few years before he married Emerenciana.[3] They had their own property and were probably still prosperous but then Charles died about 1912 and Emerenciana found herself alone with seven children between 2 and 13. She was a beautiful woman and could probably have remarried for the security but she took a different path.

She ran her farm herself with the help of her children and never remarried. She was a "popular curandera" during the 1920s, an herbal healer.[4] She was living with one of her children in Las Vegas, New Mexico, when she passed away in 1947.[5]
