Court Record - In Aug 1798, Edgecombe Co, NC, an old patent from Gabriel Johnston, formerly Govenor, to Peleg Rogers was proved by the handwriting of Alexander of McCulloh and thereto by the oath of Willie Jones.[1] Note: it's unclear if this is for Sr. or Jr.

Research Notes

Researching the descendants of Peleg Rogers and his brother Job Rogers is extremely daunting. After they moved to Bertie Co., NC, the counties in NC were birthing new counties at a breathtaking pace. Often, there are records in three, or perhaps more, different counties in a window of time when they never moved! Add in a few actual moves and you have some real confusion. Although the names Peleg and Job are not at all common today, the children of these brothers seemed to all name son Peleg and Job. Some of their grandchildren continued the tradition creating more than a little confusion. Anyone researching this family needs to proceed with extreme caution and source their research to the hilt.

We know from letter dated 31 Jan 1759 that Peleg Rogers had five sons and one of them was Thomas Rogers of Black R., New Hanover County. That leaves four more sons.

We know from Power of Attorney, dated 15 Nov 1768, recorded in Deed Book 4, Page 155 Sampson Co., NC (old Duplin County Book) that the same Thomas Rogers of Black R., New Hanover County had a brother John Rogers of Craven District., SC. That leaves three more sons.

We know from NC Patent Book 10, page 217 that Job Rogers received a grant dated 30 Oct 1765. Peleg's brother Job did not live nearby, so he must also be a son of Peleg. That leaves two more sons.

We know from a series of deeds recorded in Duplin Co., NC that James Rogers had sons named Peleg and Job, so he must be a son of Peleg. That leaves only one more son.

Lastly, we know Peleg Rogers of Duplin Co. was born about 1747 and later moved to Baldwin Co., GA. He must be the last remaining son of Peleg Rogers. -- David Robertson 24 Nov 2020.

This Peleg Rogers was incorrectly merged with a Peleg Rogers born in Newport, Rhode Island and who died in Newport Rhode Island. They had different wives and different children.

The first land owned by Peleg Rogers was deeded to him by his father, Thomas Rogers of Westerly Rhode Island, yeoman on February 1, 1724, He deeded 167 acres of land to his son Peleg Rogers of Newport, Cordwainer.

There were many recorded land transactions by Peleg Rogers and his family in North Carolina up until around 1768 when Peleg deeded 100 acres on Northeast Cape Fear of Duplin County, NC to John Atkins. Considering the fact that this was the first and last tract Peleg Rogers owned in Duplin County, NC, this was probably his home place.

25 Jul 1763. Henry Mcculloh sold 300 acres of land on waters of Neuse and Tarr Rivers in Johnston County, NC to Peleg Rogers of Johnston County, NC. Johnston County, NC Deed Book D-1, Page 87. Note: This Peleg is likely the son of Job of Wake County, NC.

Note: The following are likely Peleg's son Peleg.

22 Feb 1764. Peleg Rogers was patented 200 acres on Marsh Branch of Rowan Swamp of Duplin County, NC by the State of North Carolina. NC Patent Book 16, Page 44. See Margaret M. Hofmann, "Colony of North Carolina 1735 - 1764 Abstracts of Land Patents, Volume One."

21 Apr 1764. Abraham Jacobs was patented a tract on Marsh Branch of Rowan Swamp of Duplin County, NC adjacent to Peleg Rogers by the State of North Carolina. NC Patent Book 16, Page 59. See Margaret M. Hofmann, "Colony of North Carolina 1735 - 1764 Abstracts of Land Patents, Volume One."

18 Sep 1764. Peleg Rogers deeded 200 acres on Rowan Swamp of Duplin County, NC to Abraham Jacobs. See Sampson County, NC Deed Book 1, Page 494.

Note: The following is of interest. Unknown if relevant to this family.

1776 Revolutionary War record in Rhode Island: "67, BRAND Peleg, private, Capt. Topham's regiment, 1776; pay due; £20 16 00". Note: also listed; "39 BRAND, John, private, Capt. Arnold's company, Col. Lippitt's regiment; on company pay roll, Sept., 1776."[2]

31 Jan 1759. Peleg Rogers wrote his "father" in Westerly, Rhode Island. He mentioned: that he lived near his brother Job; that Job had a wife and two sons, that his wife Isabell had died April 25, 1754; and that he had five sons and three daughters of which four of his children were married. Letter dated October 7, 1985 from Bob McCrary to David H. Robertson citing [29]; [30]; and [31]. Note: This letter and other documents connected with it provide an enormous amount of information and clues on the Rogers family. Although the salutation in the letter is "Honored Father", it was addressed to Thomas Brand. Therefore, the letter is actually to the father-in-law of Peleg rather than to his father. Much of the information is connected to a lawsuit entitled Saunders Vs. Baker litigated in Newport, RI and involves a lot of references to the Brand family. If Isabell Rogers predeceased her father Thomas Brand, then the estate records of Thomas Brand, if extant, could conclusively prove the children of Peleg Rogers. The fact that Job is mentioned as having two sons tends to identify Job who died in Wake County, NC as the brother of Peleg. Four of the five sons of Peleg, to wit, Thomas, Job, James, and Peleg, are identified by association in the Duplin County, NC area. The fifth son is John Rogers, at one time of Craven County, SC on 15 November 1768 it is recorded in Sampson County, NC Deed book 4, page 155 that John Rogers of Craven County SC gave power of Attorney to his brother Thomas Rogers of Black River. The power of Att. was witnessed by Peleg Rogers.

30 Oct 1765. Peleg Rogers was patented 100 acres on Black River of New Hanover County, NC by the State of North Carolina. [32], [33], [34], and [35]

28 Feb 1767. Peleg Rogers deeded 100 acres on Black River of New Hanover County, NC to James Molpus. The deed was witnessed by another Peleg Rogers. Consideration was paid by John Devane and Thomas Rogers. [36]Patent dated 30 Oct., 1765. Patent Book 17, p. 270. [37] Note: On 2 May, 1737 John Malpuss deeded two tracts on Chinkapen Branch of Bertie County, NC, adjacent to Thomas Rogers and William Rogers to William Williamson. [38], [39]

1768. Peleg Rogers deeded 100 acres on Northeast Cape Fear of Duplin County, NC to John Atkins. Sampson County, NC Deed Book 6, Page 195. See 8 Apr., 1756. Note: Considering the fact that this was the first and last tract Peleg Rogers owned in Duplin County, NC, this was probably his homeplace.

The following residents of Duplin County, New Hanover County and Bladen County, NC signed a petition for the formation of Sampson County: Peleg Rogers, Peleg Rogers, Thomas Rogers, Thomas Rogers, James Rogers, Jessey Rogers, Job Rogers, Jesse Rogers, Ruben Rogers. Note: There are more than one version of this Petition. [40]. Note: I [Robertson-18231] had two differing hard copies of this Petition (and have misplaced them). Rogers-33540 and Rogers-20154 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same person. The name search failed and I created a new Profile for Peleg. He has the same parents, same wife . You have four sons. I have added the person I believe is the fifth son. We may need to do some further reconciling of the sons after we merge Peleg.
