Marriages

  1. Catharina (Trijntje) Roelofs married Februari 24, 1647 at New Amsterdam Guillaume (Willem) de Keij, son of Abraham Lievenszn de Keij and Abigail Mourisdr Regoot. Willem was a grandson of the famous city architect also from Haarlem, Lieven Lievenszn de Keij / New Amsterdam, 24 Feb 1647, Willem de Key, b. Haarlem, 3 Jan 1625, merchant in New Amsterdam, son of Abraham Lievenz and Abigael Rijgoots/ William de Key, a Free Merchant at New Amsterdam. Banns were posted on Feb 24, 1647. Marriage intent was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, NN[1]1647 24 Feb; Wilhem Key, jm van Haerlem; Tryn Roelofs, jd van Amsterdam
  2. marriage Lucas Rodenburg|Rodenborg possibly took place at Curaçao/ aft Sept 1652, Lucas Rodenburg, 1643 councillor, 1647 vice-director of WIC on Curacao, d. betw. 12 June and 24 Dec. 1655/ Lucas Rodenborg WIC Vice-Director at Curacao, Marriage occurred ca. 16 Sep, 1652. Possibly at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam. No marriage record was found there. It is also possible, that the marriage occurred either at sea or at Fort Amsterdam, Curacao. It would appear that they lived in Curaçao until after Lucas's death. Lucas died in Curaçao between 12 June and 24 Dec. 1655 [2] Widow Catarina Roelofs returned to New Amsterdam with her children. On April 17, 1657, his widow Catrina Roeloffse made a petition for permission to raise money on account of the salary due her late husband Lucas Rodenburgh, who was Vice Director of Curacoa, Bonaire and Aruba. Her petition was granted Lucas Rodenburg.
  3. Johannes (Jan) Pieterszn van Brugge |Verbrugge|Ver Brugge, from Haerlem and Catharina (Trijntje) Roelofs, widow of Lúcas Rodenborg married March 29, 1658 . The int. marriage was April 24, 1658 at New Amsterdam. Immigrant Johannes Pieterszn Ver Brugge, a trader from Haarlem, already arrived in New Amsterdam before 1651[3] She was 28 years of age as she married Jan Ver Brugge/ New Amsterdam, 24 april 1658, Johannes Pietersz van Brugge (van Brugh, Verbrugge), b. aft. 1624, merchant, president-alderman of New Amsterdam 1656 burgomaster 1657 and 1673, d. 1699, son of Pieter Jansz, merchant and Helena Pollai."[4]/Johannes Van Brug on Mar 29, 1658 (banns). Marriage was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Manhattan, New Amsterdam, NN[5]. Johannes Van Brug came from Harlem, Holland and was a fur trader and business man in both Rensselarswyck and New Amsterdam. He resided upon the water syde (the west side) of Pearl Street between Wall and William Streets. He was prominently connected with the Dutch West India Company. Widow Rodenborg was his third wife.

Children

  • From the first marriage/Uit dit 1e huwelijk kreeg zij
  1. one daughter, Abigail de Keij baptized at New Amsterdam Februari 9, 1648 ; witnesses: Jacob de Keij and Anna Regood./ Abigal|Abigael de Key, bp. on Feb 9, 1647/48. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, NN[6]. [Nothing further was found for Abigal]
  • From the second marriage they had two known children. These children witnessed the baptism of their younger step sister's children. :
  1. Elisabeth (b ca 1655 geboren op Curaçao) / Elizabeth Rodenborg , b. aft 1652 in Curaçao
  2. Lucretia, op 1 juli 1657 baptized New Amsterdam witn: Govert Loockermans, Johannes de Peijster and Sara Roelofs. /Lucrecia Rodenborg. b. sometime before April 17, 1657. She was baptized on Jul 01, 1657. Baptism occurred sometime after her birth[7], there was a suspected recording/translation error in the NARDC Baptism Record, naming Johannes Rodenborg instead of Lucas Rodenborg as father. Catharina Roelofs may have been with child at Lucas' death (ca. Dec 1655.) She removed from Curacao to New Amsterdam with her child/children. Her future husband Johannes Van Brug may have accompanied Catharina to Lucretia's baptism, and been thought to have been the father by the recording Dominee.
  • From the third marriage:
  1. Helena (1) Van Brug bp. Apr 4, 1659. [8]
  2. Helena (2) Van Brug bp. Jul 28, 1660. [9]
  3. Anna Van Brug bp. Sep 10 1662. [10]
  4. Catharina Van Brug bp. Apr 19, 1665. [11]
  5. Pieter Van Brug, bp. Jul 14, 1666. [12] Pieter Van Brug became mayor of Albany, New York.

Notes

Note: of particular interest is that Lucas Rodenborg was the Vice-Director of West India Company at Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba; having been elected to that position when Pieter Stuyvesant was promoted to Director General of The West India Companies interests at New Amsterdam. He held this position until about June 1655 when he apparently died. His widow Catharina Roelofs (possibly with child) returned with her child/children to New Amsterdam. The New Vice Director Beck, in 1658, sent Johannes and Catharina Van Brug wedding presents.[13]
Apparently Johannes Van Brug raised the daughters of Lucas Rodenborg, namely Elizabeth and Lucretia Rodenborg, and provided for them in his wills. Because of the confusion of name of Lucretia's father in her Jul 01, 1657 baptism record, "Johannes" rather than "Lucas" Rodenborg [14], suggests that Johannes Van Brugge may have been present at the child's baptism

I have looked at the article by William Hoffman in TAG vol. 30 (Apr 1954) that I mentioned below. It agrees with what you have above. So, it appears that Mr. Bogardus left out a generation. Mr. Hoffman has that Lieven de Key m. Cathalyn de Caluwe in London on 21 Dec 1585.

So we have: Lieven de Key m. (London 21 Dec 1585) Cathalyn de Caluwe Abraham (b. London) m. (at Haarlem 29 May 1611) Abigael Rijgoots Guillaume (Willem) bap. at Haarlem 3 Jan 1625

Willem marr. in New Amsterdam Catharina Roelofs, the daughter of Anneke Jans with banns 24 Feb 1647.

(Incidently, Hoffman says that some of Lieven's "fine buildings may still be admired". So, I assume that means they were still standing in 1954.)

The emphasis of the article by Hoffman (above) is on the Jacob Toeniszen (de Key) from Tuyl, who came to New Amsterdam about 1650. He found no relationship betweem the Jacob from Tuyl and Willem from the Ghent family.

Furthermore, Hoffman says re. the above baptism sponsor, Jacob: "This Jacob de Key was undoubtedly Willems's brother, and not the ancestor of the de Key family who was not yet in New Netherland." By "ancestor of the [American] de Key family" he means Jacob Thoeniszen from Tuyl, as Willem left no male descendants.

>>>The second sponsor in 1648 is Anna Regood, the same surname as >>>William's mother. >>>My question: who knows more about Anna Regood?

I did not see anything more on the Regood family in the Hoffman article.

Roeloffse-14 and Roelofs-1 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

It would appear that Catarina, aka Trijntje, should have the patronymic surname of Roeloffs or Roeloffse, rather than Jansen or Janssoon. Jansen or Janssoon was the patroymic surname of her father Roeloff, and would not be applied to her generation. It is understood that her mother Anneke Janswould have the patronymic surname of Jans or Jansen, however that would not apply to Catarina her daughter. Unless someone has a particular reason to retain the surname Jansen, it should be removed from the profile for Catarina.

I think that maybe this Catherine Roeloffson is of a different family than Roelof Janssoon and Anneke Jans.
