Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Charlotte Rodd was born in Cornwall, England.
Canada Flag
Charlotte Rodd lived in Canada.

Charlotte was baptized in St Gennys Parish on August 6th 1848. She is the daughter of John Rodd, a labourer and Maria his wife. [1]

Charlotte first appears on a census in 1851 living at 9 Crackington Havens in St Gennys with her parents and siblings.[2]

Sometime after January 31st 1852, the whole family left England for Canada. [See research notes] Charlotte appeared to be in the same household with her parents and siblings in the 1861 Census. It is not clear on the census if Eliza and her husband are also in the same household or living next door.[3]

On the 1871 census Charlotte is recorded incorrectly as age 20. She was living with her parents and her brother John.[4]

Charlotte gave birth to a son on October 25th 1872. He was registered John Rodd noted to be illegitimate. John Rodd, Farmer from Mariposa, Charlotte's father, registered the birth.[5] It is not known who John's father was. Nor is it known what became of him. In 1881, the child should have been about 9 years old, however there was no John present with his mother, 'Sharlot', and grandparents, John and 'Mariah'. There was, however, a child named William, age 7, present in the household. None of the relationships were captured on that census, therefore it is not known if William is the same child that was registered as John or whose child he was.[6]

Charlotte continued to live with her parents until their deaths. Her father died suddenly on May 8th 1882.[7] Charlotte registered the death. When her mother died 4 years later, her brother John Short Rodd, registered the death.[8]

Charlotte has yet to be found on any records after the death of her father. A marriage or death for her has not been found.

Research Notes

  • No birth registration has been found, having searched various spellings of first and last name on the GRO site, and an Ancestry search for 'Charlotte' without a surname before the baptism date in the Stratton RD. No likely results found.
  • Emigration time is based on the following. The family is in England March 30th 1851, the time of the census there. Canada's 1851 census was not conducted until January 12th 1852. The family was not found in Canada at that time. Charlotte's half-sister Eliza, who would have immigrated at the same time, was married in Canada in December of 1852.[9] There is no evidence that Eliza knew her future husband before arrival. A few months may have passed between the time the Rodds arrived in the area and Eliza married.
  • Profiles for siblings and child need to be created.
